Helldivers 2, the alien-stomping co-op third person shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios, has taken the gaming world by storm after its launch to PlayStation and PC earlier this month. The sudden popularity of the launch and subsequent influx of players may have been a bit more than Arrowhead was expecting, however.
Player counts for Helldivers 2 have peaked at over 330,000 on Steam alone, and it has skyrocketed to number one in the global top-sellers on the Steam marketplace at the time of writing. Such strong player counts have seemingly overloaded the allotted server space for the game, and players are being placed in waiting queues with a “Servers at capacity. Please try again later.” error while they wait.
The developers released a post on X/Twitter addressing the issue. They state that they are “working without delay to improve the issue” and that they “hope to have a fix in place as soon as possible”. We can assume this fix will involve extra server capacity. In the meantime players will have to deal with waiting in queues, especially if you plan to play during the peak hours of 9:00 P.M. – 10:00 P.M. EST.
While it may be easy to blame Arrowhead for being short-sighted when it came to expected server capacity, they likely could have never seen this type of success coming. Helldivers, the first game in the series which was also released by Arrowhead in 2015, had an all-time peak player count of 6,691. That player count is over 325,000 fewer than that of their current title!
We trust that the Helldivers 2 team will live up to the success of their title and deliver the increased server support needed to get us all back into the fight against the alien horde – for freedom!
